Gary Kubiak: Broncos Cleared After Accident

The Denver Broncos followed their signing on Monday of general manager/vice president of football operations John Elway to a new five-year extension with the hiring of former head coach Gary Kubiak to a scouting position.

Denver Broncos John Elway Gary Kubiak news

Mike Klis of KUSA and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter both reported Tuesday that Kubiak — who stepped down as Denver’s head coach at the end of the 2016 season following a series of health problems — will serve as a scouting advisor for the Broncos.

Kubiak — who will be 56 next month — missed a Broncos game last season after being transported to a hospital for what was believed to be a complex migraine. He also suffered a mini-stroke when he was the Houston Texans’ head coach in 2013.

“I’m getting out of coaching, but I have a lot to give,’’ Kubiak said at his retirement press conference on Jan. 2. “I’m going to find something else to do and I’m going to wake up with that same passion and do that, just like I’ve coached for the last 20-something years.’’

As Schefter reported, Kubiak will be based in Houston — where he was head coach for seven years — for his new role in evaluating college players for the draft, and will occasionally return to Denver for meetings. Kubiak will thus likely be interacting with his son Klein, who is a Broncos southwest area scout. Another of his sons, Klint, is an offensive assistant on current Broncos head coach Vance Joseph’s staff.

Kubiak helped lead the Broncos to a Super Bowl 50 title after the 2015 season, the national championship game after which Peyton Manning retired. He played quarterback for the team from 1983 to 1991.

Elway’s deal, meanwhile, will keep him in Denver through the 2021 season. Although the value of the pact has not been released, Elway’s new contract is expected to make him the highest-paid NFL general manager.

“During these last six seasons, John’s clearly established himself as one of the best general managers in all of sports,” President and CEO Joe Ellis said in a statement released by the Broncos. “He”s demonstrated impressive football instincts, a strong business acumen and a consistent ability to build competitive teams.”

Since Elway, 57, took over as GM in 2011, the Broncos have dominated the AFC West, compiling a 67-29 record along with two Super Bowl appearances (2013, 2015) and five division titles. Only the New England Patriots’ .781 winning percentage bests the Broncos’ .698 mark over that span.

Elway, another former Broncos quarterback, also helped the franchise win its first two Lombardi trophies after the 1997 and 1998 seasons, and retired after Denver’s second Super Bowl victory during that time. The Hall of Famer was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick out of Stanford in 1983, and at the time of his retirement from his 16-year career with the Broncos set a record for most victories by a starting quarterback and was the second-most prolific passer in NFL history. Elway was also one of only two players to ever score a rushing touchdown in four different Super Bowls (the other being Thurman Thomas) and the only quarterback to do so.

“I appreciate the trust and confidence that Joe has shown in me,” Elway said Monday, via the Broncos’ official website. “[Principal owner] Pat Bowlen has always put outstanding leadership in place, and I’m grateful for the support Joe gives us to compete for championships each and every year.

“This is a special place, and the Broncos are home to me. While there’s still a lot of work to be done, I’m excited about the future of this team and this organization.”

Among the top players Elway has helped recruit to Denver over the years are Manning — the biggest free-agent fish of the new millennium — Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller, and other Pro Bowl talents like DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward and Emmanuel Sanders.

Elway also brought in valuable college free agents like Chris Harris Jr. and C.J. Anderson.

Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak had a health scare following his team’s 23-16 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

About an hour after the game ended, the team stated Kubiak was diagnosed with a “complex migraine condition that caused extreme fatigue and body weakness.” He is expected to be released from the hospital Monday afternoon after “feeling much better” Monday morning, the Broncos wrote in a statement.

The Broncos’ statement also said Kubiak underwent “several precautionary tests” at the hospital in Denver, including an MRI and CT scan, both of which returned normal.

According to the latest update, Kubiak will not coach the Broncos against the Chargers in San Diego on Thursday and will not return to the team until Oct. 17, general manager John Elway announced Monday afternoon.

Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis has been elevated to interim head coach.

The 55-year-old coach has dealt with health issues during a game before. He suffered a transient ischemic attack, or mini-stroke, in 2013 during halftime of a game while serving as head coach of the Houston Texans.

The Falcons (4-1) defeated the defending Super Bowl champion Broncos (4-1) using a strong series of I-formation runs and short passes. The game marked Denver’s first loss since Dec. 20 at Pittsburgh, and left the Minnesota Vikings (5-) as the NFL’s last undefeated team.

Atlanta running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for an impressive 119 yards and a 4.4-yard average.

A week after setting a franchise record with 503 yards passing in a runaway victory over the Carolina Panthers– the Super Bowl 50 losers–Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 267 yards Sunday and only two of those (covering 29 yards) went to Julio Jones.

Last week, Jones became only the sixth 300-yard receiver in NFL annals. Coleman, who played despite having sickle cell trait, showed off his speed by catching four passes for 132 yards to go with 31 yards on six carries.

Ryan’s small total included a 31-yard touchdown toss to Coleman after Ricardo Allen’s interception at the Denver 42 in the third quarter that made it 20-3.

The game also marked the Broncos’ first home loss since Dec. 13 against the Oakland Raiders.

Paxton Lynch made his first NFL start as quarterback for the Broncos. Lynch, the 26th overall pick in 2016 out of Memphis, got the starting nod because Trevor Siemian’s bruised A.C. joint in his non-throwing shoulder was still bothering him a week after he was taken down in Tampa Bay.

Lynch struggled, however, completing 23 of 35 passes for 223 yards with a late TD to Demaryius Thomas and an interception. He was sacked a half-dozen times, including 3½ times by outside linebacker Vic Beasley.

Lynch’s footwork was a disaster, and his overthrows and misfires ruined any chance the Broncos had of capitalizing on the league’s 30th-ranked defense, including the NFL’s next-to-last pass defense and a patchwork linebacker corps.

The Broncos will next visit the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, while the Falcons will visit the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Following the team’s workout at Stanford University on Monday, three of the Broncos’ buses became involved in a crash on Highway 101. According to KUSA-TV in Denver, multiple players complained about feeling soreness and headaches.

The accident happened after a driver traveling ahead of the Broncos’ caravan made an illegal lane change in front of the police vehicles that were escorting the buses. One of the buses slammed on its break and a chain reaction ensued, which caused the second bus to hit the back of the first, and the third bus hitting the second. One of the buses was left unusable due to a broken windshield.

“Obviously, it scared some guys. I think we’re good, ready to go, and it’s behind us,” Kubiak said. “And it’s behind us because everyone is fine.”

The Broncos will face off against the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco on Feb. 7.

The Denver Broncos announced today that Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will become the team’s new head coach. The deal is reportedly for four years and will be formally announced at a press conference tomorrow.

Kubiak has had success at the NFL head coaching level, building the Houston Texans as a playoff contender in recent years. He’s also helped improve the Ravens’ offense and Joe Flacco’s game the past season in Baltimore.  Although Kubiak told the press he was staying in Baltimore after the Ravens’ divisional round loss to the New England Patriots, the Denver opening was too enticing for the former Broncos backup quarterback to pass by. Kubiak ended his career by serving as backup to John Elway, now the Broncos’ general manager, and then started his coaching career in a position with Denver.

The move comes a week after former head coach John Fox and the Broncos parted ways after their loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round. Fox has since been hired by the Chicago Bears to take over as their head coach.

Elway released a statement today, saying “Gary Kubiak has established a track record of leadership, success and high character during his 30 seasons in the NFL. While there is no question he is a Bronco, what Gary has learned from his other opportunities around the league, especially in his eight seasons as a head coach, will tremendously benefit our organization.”

The move comes as question marks surround the Denver Broncos, especially regarding the future and health of star quarterback Peyton Manning. A very uncharacteristic final month to the season for Manning has become a cause for concern around Denver and will most certainly be one of Kubiak’s biggest challenges ahead. Even still, Kubiak will inherit a very solid team that is just a year removed from an AFC Championship and a team that’s made the playoffs four years in a row.
