Blake Snell struck out 10 batters over six innings of one-run ball Tuesday night in his return to the Dodgers’ rotation, more than three months after his last MLB appearance, as Los Angeles beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in 10 innings on a Max Muncy walk-off hit.

Snell allowed just three hits and a walk, retiring his first 10 batters in order and striking out the side in the first inning on three different pitches — a changeup, a four-seamer and a curveball. He ran into his only trouble in the fourth, allowing a run on back-to-back singles and a Salvador Perez sacrifice fly, but shut the door from there. He finished with 84 pitches, well beyond the 75-80 pitch target the Dodgers had set for him, and picked up a no-decision.

“That’s the Snell that we’re used to seeing,” Muncy said after his game-ending hit sealed the win.

A Tough Road Back

The outing marked just Snell’s second appearance of the 2026 season. He opened the year on the injured list with lingering shoulder fatigue, returned briefly in May, then landed back on the IL after loose bodies were discovered in his pitching elbow. He underwent a NanoNeedle Scope procedure to remove them, a surgery that expedited his recovery but still kept him sidelined until August.

Manager Dave Roberts credited Snell’s growth since his rocky May 9 season debut, when he allowed five runs in three innings. “Coming back from rehab and to kind of feel your way into the middle of a season is very difficult,” Roberts said. “I do think that he learned from the first one. We needed to win tonight, and we needed to win a series, and it started with him.”

Salt Lake City Silver Lining

Snell said a difficult final rehab start in high-altitude Salt Lake City — where he allowed three runs, four walks and two homers in 3 2/3 innings — ultimately sharpened his command by forcing him to adjust his pitch shapes. “To have that start and be that frustrated pitching… to be able to come here and just pitch and know I can throw a curveball where I want, whenever I want, and a fastball — that felt way better,” Snell said.

It was the seventh double-digit strikeout start by a Dodger this season, and Snell said his surgically repaired arm now “feels as good as it has in years.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers‘ starting rotation has been nothing short of amazing through the first 2 games of the National League Championship series, after Blake Snell’s eight-inning masterclass performance in Game 1. Yoshinobu Yamamoto followed it up with an even more remarkable performance on Tuesday. The first win in the postseason since 2017, leading the Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Yamamoto had a leadoff home run from Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio and went on to allow just two more hits, striking out nine in the process. It was an unexpected turnaround from his disastrous start in July in Milwaukee, where he did not make it out of the first inning.

With back-to-back outings of eight innings or more, the Dodgers’ starters have allowed just one run in the series, forcing Milwaukee’s bullpen to cover more than 11 innings in two games. Los Angeles’ relievers have pitched a single inning. The Dodgers now hold a commanding 2-0 series lead heading back to Dodger Stadium, where Tyler Glasnow will take the mound for Game 3.

For the Dodgers, this postseason has been a display of precision and control. Their starting rotation owns a 1.54 ERA, the lowest by any playoff team since 2012. Waiting for Game 4, Los Angeles looks unstoppable, a team peaking at exactly the right time in their quest for back-to-back World Series titles.

Milwaukee’s lineup, which led the National League in on-base percentage during the regular season, has struggled to adjust to the Dodgers’ relentless pitching. Manager Pat Murphy admitted after Game 2, “that his hitters were pressing too hard and chasing pitches they normally wouldn’t.”

With the series shifting back to Los Angeles, the Dodgers have all the momentum. If their rotation continues to perform at this level, another trip to the World Series feels inevitable.

SEATTLE, WA - JUNE 3: Starter Blake Snell #4 of the Tampa Bay Rays delivers a pitch during a game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on June 3, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners won 2-1.

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell Tuesday, acquiring the ace in a five-year, $182 million deal. Snell will join Yoshinobu Yamamoto and a recovering Shohei Ohtani in yet another stacked Dodgers rotation.

Snell’s new contract will include a massive $52 million signing bonus and deferred payments, a move popularized by the Dodgers last season when they signed Ohtani with a $700 million contract. Los Angeles has already compiled nearly $1 million in deferred payments, a risk they are willing to take later on in order to contend for championships now.

In his only season with the Giants in 2024, Snell struggled to get his feet under him early on after signing a two-year deal with the team in mid-March. He eventually performed solidly in a limited capacity, but the Giants were already well out of playoff contention by the time he did most of his work on the mound. Finishing the season with a 3.15 ERA in 20 starts, Snell opted out of his two-year, $62 million deal with the team to pursue a long-term contract.

The Dodgers’ early move will help set the market for other free agent pitchers this off-season, with major names like Roki Sasaki and Corbin Burnes still unsigned. Snell is also represented by agent Scott Boras, who also represents the likes of Juan Soto, Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso, notable sluggers looking for massive deals of their own. In many ways, Snell’s signing will kickstart the rest of these negotiations and provide an update baseline on the current market.

After last off-season, in which the Dodgers signed Ohtani and Yamamoto, and went on to win the World Series, some have begun to observe that Los Angeles are taking aggressive steps to ‘buy’ championships. While it is true that the Dodgers overwhelmed many opponents this year through sheer roster quality, the team is merely one of a select few represented by immensely wealthy ownership groups.

These heavy-spending teams, including key culprits like the Mets and Yankees, can afford to play a different game than those in smaller markets and are competing at a different level. Big money and splashy free agent signings don’t always translate to World Series success, especially in recent years, but the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets, all appeared in championship series last season. With Snell’s signing, the Dodgers have already ensured that they will be a heavy favorite to return to the postseason in 2025.

In the age of sports science, what used to be conventional wisdom has been turned upside down.

The NFL wants to eliminate two pre-season games as teams are resting starters for most or all of the four games. The same could be said for MLB spring training. What used to be filled with major leaguers has become triple-A players wearing professional logos for February and March.

However, Blake Snell wants to sound the alarm for the importance of practice.

The former Cy Young did not receive a proper ramp-up going into the 2024 season after signing a two-year $62 million deal with the San Francisco Giants on March 27, the first week of the new baseball season. After only four innings on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies while allowing a home run, Snell opened up to the media about his lack of sharpness.

“It’s not easy,” he said. “I didn’t face a big league hitter until I pitched my first game in the big leagues this year. It’s tough. You just have nothing to go off of. You’re kind of like let’s see what we got.”

He looks nothing like the starter who went 180 innings last year with a 2.25 ERA with the San Diego Padres. The lefty is winless to start the year, with a record of 0-3 after five appearances. He allowed 15 runs in three starts during April before landing on the IL with an adductor strain. He went just 3 1/3 innings in his first time on the mound against Pittsburgh before facing the Phillies a week later.

The Giants are doing all they can to stay afloat while waiting for their ace to round into form. The Bay Area ballclub is 7-3 over their last ten, but only 29-28. Snell’s squad sits 6.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers as the calendar flips over to June but is currently a wildcard spot by 0.5 games.

SEATTLE, WA - JUNE 3: Starter Blake Snell #4 of the Tampa Bay Rays delivers a pitch during a game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on June 3, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners won 2-1.

Following his three-year stint with the San Diego Padres, pitcher Blake Snell is currently a free agent. The 2023 Cy Young winner has seen interest from multiple teams, but is yet to be signed to a roster as the 2024 MLB season quickly arrives. Of the teams offering Snell a contract, the Los Angeles Angels, San Fransisco Giants and New York Yankees have all stood out.

In his last season with the Padres, the 31-year-old had a 2.25 ERA with 234 strikeouts in 180 innings pitched to take home the Cy Young award and prove himself as one of the best players at the position. Though it was a fantastic season, Snell also won the Cy Young in 2018, in just his third year in the league with the Tampa Bay Rays.

“As far as his arsenal, it’s a power fastball, and he has a curveball and slider to go with it,” Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón said. “It’s swing-and-miss stuff. Anytime you can get out of a jam with swing-and-miss stuff … is a big deal because in big spots you can get the strikeout you need. Obviously, a lot of strikeouts.”

The Yankees reportedly offered Snell a six-year $150 million contract earlier in the offseason, but as the contract was never signed New York thinks they are far from a deal getting done. The two sides are apparently ‘$100 million off’ as New York wanted to offer him something similar to the six-year $162 million contract they gave to Rodón. Snell wanted a contract similar to that of Washington National’s pitcher Stephen Strasburg as he signed for seven years and $245 million in 2019. The Yankees are currently over the luxury tax cap, so if Snell were to sign with the team they would need to pay 110% of his salary in tax each year.

“You shouldn’t have to have a $300 million payroll to win a world championship because nobody has,” Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said last spring.

Despite the ownership’s thoughts, the Yankees have always been willing to spend money to secure the league’s top free agents and have never used the money they have available as an excuse. However, the team recently announced that their 2024 roster would be the first to go over the $297 million competitive balance tax (CBT), causing a tax for every player’s contract that doesn’t fit within the financial limits. New York also received a 10-spot penalty in the 2023 MLB Draft for going over the luxury tax the year before, despite only finishing fourth in the AL East in their worst season since 1992.

Snell has made more than $47 million in his career, with $16 million coming from his Cy Young season with the Padres. And though he is asking for a steep raise in the form of about $35 million a year, the Yankees would be the team to take him up on that offer, and cement themselves with one of the best bullpen’s in the league. As a team steeped in history and championships, the big time move would no doubt increase their chances next season, in hopes to shake off their 82-80 record in 2023.

“I do feel like, considering what we lost in some trades this year, I think we’re in a much better depth position than maybe I even expected,” New York manager Aaron Boone said. “But you know that depth is going to be challenged. We’ll find out.”

As Spring Training approaches and the start of the season draws closer and closer, Snell is currently still a free agent. Leaving last year with the most prestigious award a pitcher can win he is definitely a player teams want, but it just comes down to agreeing on a contract. Wherever he lands, Snell will provide a key pitching role and hope to make an impact in the postseason for his next team.

SEATTLE, WA - JUNE 3: Starter Blake Snell #4 of the Tampa Bay Rays delivers a pitch during a game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on June 3, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners won 2-1.

Another season means another controversy regarding pitcher Blake Snell and his late-game usage. For seven innings, the Tuesday night game looked like a special one for him. He had one of the best outings of his career and had gotten through seven innings without having allowed a hit but that came with a key caveat. He needed 107 pitches to get through those seven innings, and his manager deemed it the proper time to remove him from the game.

Reliever Pierce Johnson came on for the eighth and gave up a hit with one out. It was a pretty cheap hit, however. The no-hitter from Joe Musgrove back in April remains the only one in Padres history. The Padres accomplished the most important thing possible, though, and went on to win the game, 3-0, while allowing just three Diamondbacks hits.

As for Snell, he was probably all the way maxed out on his stamina. He threw 122 pitches last time out in 7 2/3 innings. Otherwise, 108 pitches was his biggest workload of the season. Snell hasn’t completed eight innings all season and, in fact, he’s never done it in his entire career. The 7 2/3 innings in his last start was the longest of his career. He has only gone at least seven innings 16 times and more than seven four times; three of those in 2018 and the other being this past outing against the Dodgers on Aug. 25. Also in favor of manager Jayce Tingler‘s decision-making process was that the Padres only had a 3-0 lead and have a banged-up starting rotation. Not only could they not afford to lose Snell right now, but they couldn’t afford to lose the game. They entered Tuesday night a half-game behind the Reds for the second wild-card spot in the National League. Because the Reds’ game got postponed, they are now in a virtual tie. All this is to say that while it’s easy to kick and scream about taking a pitcher out during a no-hitter, everything else under these circumstances said pulling Snell was the cerebral move. The Padres had a good night overall, and Tingler should be commended for putting his team over an individual pursuit.

In 2020, the San Diego Padres ended their 13-year playoff drought finishing second in the National League West Division behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres have made the postseason six times and lost two World Series across the franchises’ 52-year history. Last season, San Diego finished eighth in ERA with a 3.86 ERA and fourth in homers with 96. From the looks of it, the Padres have what it takes to make the playoffs once again in 2021.

Here are San Diego’s projected starters.

SAN DIEGO PADRES PROJECTED BATTING LINEUP:

  1. OF Trent Grisham
  2. SS Fernando Tatis Jr
  3. 3B Manny Machado
  4. 1B Eric Hosmer
  5. OF Wil Myers
  6. OF Tommy Pham
  7. 2B Ha-Seong Kim
  8. C Austin Nola
  9. Pitcher

SAN DIEGO PADRES PROJECTED PITCHING STAFF:

  • SP1 Yu Darvish
  • SP2 Blake Snell
  • SP3 Dinelson Lamet
  • SP4 Chris Paddack
  • SP5 Joe Musgrove
  • CL Keone Kela

SAN DIEGO PADRES TEAM OUTLOOK:

Over the course of the offseason, San Diego made a plethora of moves. One of those moves was trading starter Joey Lucchesi to the New York Mets in a three-way trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates for starter Joe Musgrove. The Padres also engaged in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for ace Blake Snell. The last deal the team participated in was acquiring ace Yu Darvish and his batterymate Victor Caratini from the Chicago Cubs.

Besides trades, the Padres signed relievers Mark Melancon and Keone Kela. They also re-signed Jurickson Profar and added second baseman, Ha-Seong Kim. The padres lost first baseman, Mitch Moreland, relievers Trevor Rosenthal and Kirby Yates, starter Garrett Richards and catcher Jason Castro to the free-agent market. Regarding their pitching, San Diego improved immensely but did not have one up on the Dodgers. Their bullpen has competitive arms, but they could use another elite reliever.

Their offense is powerful because of superstars Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado. The rest of the starting lineup is up to par but doesn’t match the other top teams in baseball. From the looks of it, the Padres will be in the playoff hunt, but they would need a few more pieces to be a World Series caliber team.

SEATTLE, WA - JUNE 3: Starter Blake Snell #4 of the Tampa Bay Rays delivers a pitch during a game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on June 3, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners won 2-1.

The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to trade their ace pitcher Blake Snell to the San Diego Padres in exchange for prospects.

The Rays are continuing to trade away their pitchers that helped lead them to the World Series last season. The latest is agreeing to a trade that will deal away Snell to San Diego for prospects. Snell, who is arguably their ace pitcher, won the CY Young award during the 2018 season, finishing the season with 21 wins, 5 losses and an ERA of 1.89. Last season, Snell won four games, two losses and had an ERA of 3.24 during the shortened 2020 season.

For the Padres, they are continuing to strengthen their pitching rotation by agreeing to trade for the former CY Young winner. The Padres are looking to strengthen and hope to threaten the Los Angeles Dodgers for supremacy in the National League. Last season, San Diego reached the NLCS to face the Dodgers but were promptly swept by Los Angeles.

In an effort to have a dangerous bullpen, they are sacrificing their prospects to do so. In this trade, they are sending Luis Patino, Cole Wilcox, Blake Hunt and Francisco Mejia.

Patino was the Padre’s number three prospect and 23 overall ranked prospect in the league.

Wilcox is a 21-year-old pitcher who was drafted with the third-round pick by San Diego. He was the seventh-ranked prospect for the team. In his final season with the University of Georgia, he had a 1.57 ERA and three wins.

Hunt is a 22-year-old catcher who had a batting average of .255 and five home runs in 89 games for the Class A Fort Wayne.

Mejia struggled to hit as he only hit .077 in 17 games for Tampa Bay, last season.

The trade is not official until all players pass a physical.

SEATTLE, WA - JUNE 3: Starter Blake Snell #4 of the Tampa Bay Rays delivers a pitch during a game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on June 3, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners won 2-1.

Major League Baseball’s owners have approved the leagues proposal for starting the season, the MLB Players Association is set to vote on the proposal sometime in the next week. One of the big points in the league’s proposal has been that the players and the owners will split the revenue for this season 50/50. Not all players are on board with this idea.

Tampa Bay Rays’ pitching ace Blake Snell on Wednesday voiced his issues on playing on a reduced salary for the 2020 season, saying that he will not play and that it is “just not worth it.”

Snell said the risk is extremely high given the coronavirus pandemic. “Y’all gotta understand, man, for me to go – for me to take a pay cut is not happening, because the risk is through the roof,” Snell said while answering questions on his Twitch channel. “It’s a shorter season, less pay. No, I gotta get my money. I’m not playing unless I get mine, ok? And that’s just the way it is for me. Like, I’m sorry you guys think differently, but the risk is way the hell higher and the amount of money I’m making is way lower. Why would I think about doing that?”

The MLBPA is expected to reject the provision of the MLB’s proposal regarding the revenue split. Back in March, the league guaranteed players prorated salaries.

The 27-year old Snell is entering year two of the five-year contract worth $50 million he signed with the Rays a few years back. The former AL Cy Young Award winner is expected to make about $7 million next season, but said that he deserves to get the money that was agreed upon between himself and the Rays. “What do you mean it should not be a thing? It should 100% be a thing. If I’m gonna play, I should be getting the money I signed to be getting paid. I should not be getting half of what I’m getting paid because the season’s cut in half, on top of a 33% cut of the half that’s already there – so I’m really getting, like, 25%. On top of that, it’s getting taxed. So imagine how much I’m actually making to play, you know what I’m saying?”
