St. Louis Rams Look To Sign Nick Foles To Extension

The St. Louis Rams are looking to sign QB Nick Foles to a long-term deal before the season, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

Rams Look To Sign Nick Foles To Extension

Now, the Rams wanting to sign Nick Foles to an extension before he even plays a down may seem surprising, but St. Louis is currently in a precarious situation. When trading Sam Bradford for Nick Foles, they inherited the QB’s contract. He is currently at the end of his four-year deal and is set to make $1.5 million.

Despite injuries, Foles has proven himself a capable quarterback: he has thrown for 6,753 yards, 46 touchdowns and only 17 interceptions in three years. On top of this, the Rams’ backups proved last year that the organization is awfully thin at the position. Therefore, St. Louis may actually choose to extend his contract without him ever taking a snap.

Obviously, the organization is weighing the options. And according to Rapoport’s report, the possibility that he is a franchise QB outweighs blindly guaranteeing Foles money. On top of this, if he plays well this season and goes into the 2016 offseason with high market value, the Rams may not be able to afford him.

Also, it is important to consider that the Ryan Tannehill deal — they were both drafted in the same year — has already set a precedent when it comes to that QB draft class’ price tag. So these are all things the Rams have to consider: especially, if they ever plan to contend for the highly contested NFC West.

So giving him all that cash is certainly a risk, yet it is apparently one the Rams are willing to take. The only thing to consider is whether Foles takes the cash now or attempts to play out the year for more money, as both have their drawbacks.
