Sean Desai Fired From Eagles, Already Seeing New Job Opportunities

Philadelphia Eagles’ former defensive coordinator Sean Desai was let go from the team after a disappointing end to the season. Desai was the defensive coordinator of the team for most of the season but was demoted in December after back-to-back losses to the 49ers and Cowboys.

The Eagles then put Matt Patricia in charge of defensive play, calling for the rest of the season while Desai was in a diminished role in a coach box. The team ended the regular season losing five of their last six games and losing 32-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round.

Desai started coaching in the NFL with the Chicago Bears from 2013-2021 and was the team’s head defensive coordinator in his last year with them. In 2021, he helped the Bears become the sixth-ranked overall defense while ranking 22nd in points allowed. Desai then went to the Seattle Seahawks to become their defensive coordinator in 2022 before being hired in February by Philadelphia.

Though he wasn’t at the helm of the defense for the entirety of the season, the Eagles still struggled immensely, finishing second most in passing touchdowns allowed (35) and third most in points allowed per game (25.2). The Eagles defense was their weak point all season, ranked as the sixth worst in the league and third worst on red-zone and third down plays.

It was a short and unsuccessful stint in Philadelphia for Desai, he already has interest from other NFL teams. Most recently, Desai has interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills for their defensive coordinator positions, according to Ian Rapoport on X.

As Desai continues to search for a coaching role with many of the teams with open positions, the Eagles have already replaced him.

On Thursday, the team announced the hiring of Vic Fangio as new defensive coordinator, shortly after he parted ways with the Miami Dolphins. Fangio was previously with the Eagles in 2022 as a consultant for the team, and has more than 20 years of experience in the league as a defensive coordinator.
