Colorado Rockies left fielder Gerardo Parra exited Tuesday’s 13-10 home victory against the New York Yankees in the third inning with what manager Walt Weiss called a sprained ankle.
Parra, who will be evaluated further on Wednesday, was injured on a flyout by Jacoby Ellsbury leading off the top of the third. Shortstop Trevor Story chased after the ball in shallow left field and Parra collided with him, causing the shortstop to roll over Parra’s lower left leg.
The left fielder slammed the grass with his right hand and the team trainers rushed out to help him. Parra was then helped onto a cart and taken off Coors Field.
Parra, the biggest free agent addition to Colorado in the offseason, is listed as day-to-day following the incident, but could miss some time depending on how he feels Wednesday. He is hitting .263 with five home runs and 27 RBIs this season. He is second in the National League with 20 doubles in the first year of a three-year, $27.5 million contract.

Outfielder Ryan Raburn replaced Parra and made his first at-bat count, hitting a solo home run after Story hit a two-run homer off Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi in the fourth. DJ LeMahieu drove in a pair on a fifth-inning single and seventh-inning sacrifice fly. Carlos Gonzalez had four hits, scored three home runs–including his 15th homer of the season–and drove in two as the Rockies recorded 15 hits, four short of their season-high. The Yankees also earned 15 hits.
“Today we did a great job contributing, trying to take good at-bats, and just playing smart baseball — bunting, and moving guys over, and continuing to score runs,” Gonzalez said. “It was a great baseball game, offensively.”
The Yankees were unable to figure out Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa, who earned his third victory of the season by pitching five scoreless innings. Shortstop Didi Gregorius hit a three-run home run off Gonzalez Germen in the sixth.
New York then added seven more runs on eight hits in the eighth off Justin Miller and Miguel Castro as the Rockies saw their nine-run lead cut into one that required rookie Carlos Estevez to earn his second career save.
“This is a park where you’re never out of the game, so you keep the gas on, keep trying to score runs and shut them down,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Unfortunately, we got in a situation where we couldn’t shut them down for three or four innings. They put a lot of runs on us and got way ahead.”
The two teams will face off again in Denver on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Chad Bettis will start for the Rockies (31-33, 3rd in NL West) after an extra day of rest, while right-hander Ivan Nova will make his eighth start of the season for the Yankees (31-33, 4th in AL East), after winning his last two starts.
