Rex Ryan Blasts Jet’s Defensive Coach Blitz Call That Cost The Jet’s Win: ‘The Stupidest Call Ever!’

On Sunday, the New York Jets were on their way to winning their first game of the season. The Jets were leading 28-24 against the Las Vegas Raiders

In true Jets fashion, they blundered the lead and went onto lose the game with an ill-fated defensive play. The Jets were leading 28-24 in the fourth quarter and less than 20 seconds left in the game. All the Jets had to do was hold onto the lead and stop any plays from Raider’s quarterback Derek Carr.

However, Jet’s defensive coordinator Gregg Williams called for an all-out blitz play that would cost them the game. The play led to Jet’s left cornerback Lamar Jackson to match the Raider’s rookie wide receiver Henry Ruggs. Ruggs proved to be too quick as he was easily able to blow right past Jackson to catch Carr’s hail mary pass in the endzone. The play allowed Las Vegas to take a 31-28 lead with five seconds remaining in the game.

It left New York winless as they are now 12 losses with zero wins. Former Jet’s head coach Rex Ryan blasted the play. “That sure ain’t it,” he said. “It’s just stupid. It’s just absolutely stupid. They don’t even know how to run the cover-zero blitz…. Not only was it the stupidest call ever, but they don’t even know how to run dang cover-zero blitz. And you wonder why they give up 400 yards a game, you wonder why this team hasn’t won a game.”

“The Jets have been the laughingstock of the league,” Ryan said. “For you to put those [players] in that situation, to take the moment away from them — a win, after all their hard work — that’s just ridiculous.”

Monday morning it was said that New York had fired Williams.
