Aaron Hernandez (April 19, 2017, age 27)
Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez committed suicide by hanging at age 27 in his jail cell on April 19 after being sentenced to life in prison for murder. Examiners concluded that Hernandez suffered from stage 3 CTE, similar to that of retired players well into their 60s, according to the New York Times.
Hernandez, who played for the Patriots from 2010 to 2012, was acquitted of all charges except one in a separate case, a double homicide in Boston in 2012.
The former tight end’s family sued the NFL for not disclosing his CTE sooner, but then dropped the lawsuit.
