The injury crisis in New England keeps growing as running back LeGarrette Blount will miss the remainder of the season. He will join Nate Solder, Dion Lewis and Julian Edelman on the sideline; only Edelman has a chance to return this season, but he is out indefinitely with a broken foot.
Blount suffered a hip injury in New England’s game against the Houston Texans last weekend. In addition to leading the Patriots with 703 yards and six touchdowns this season, he was a member of last year’s Super Bowl winning squad; he memorably rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns in the AFC title game.
The injury leaves the club with only two running backs, James White and Brandon Bolden, on the active roster. They also have some potential replacements – former Bronco Montee Ball and undrafted rookie Trey Williams – on the practice squad. The team is also reportedly considering adding veteran Steven Jackson to the mix.
The only good new for New England is that they have already clinched a playoff berth and have a few weeks to sort out this situation. But, even without a strong ground game, it’s hard to pick against a team led by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.
