Patrick Reed won The Barclays tournament at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, on Sunday to secure his spot on the USA Ryder Cup team.

The victory marked the 26-year-old’s first title of the season. Reed finished at 9-under 275, and rallied from an early two-shot deficit to win the FedEx Cup playoff opener and grant himself a clear shot at the $10 million bonus.

“Everyone’s been talking about the Ryder Cup, been talking about, ‘Oh, you’re in the eighth spot and you’re on the bubble’ and all that,” Reed said after his one-shot victory. “If you go and win, it takes care of everything else. … It takes care of everything.”

Overnight leader Rickie Fowler missed out on an automatic Ryder Cup spot after carding a three-over round of 74 on Sunday to finish joint seventh. Fowler needed to finish third and will now hope to be a wildcard pick on captain Davis Love’s team.

“I wasn’t trying to get a decent finish,” Fowler said. “I was trying to win.”

Reed, on the losing team at Gleneagles in 2014, said: “I want sweet revenge, just like our whole team does.”

Europe have won the competition three times in a row, and eight times in the last 10.

Reed defeated fellow American Sean O’Hair and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo by one shot in Farmingdale to reach the top of the PGA points standings.

Scotland’s Martin Laird finished two under par, while England’s Olympic champion Justin Rose and Northern Ireland star Rory McIlroy ended on level par.

Fowler’s late collapse allowed Zach Johnson to secure the eighth and final spot.

Defending champion Jason Day of Australia struggled all week with his accuracy and was forced to settle for a 69, tying for fourth with Gary Woodland (69) and Adam Scott (71). Jordan Spieth tied for 10th, four shots behind.

Reed, who represented the U.S. at the Presidents Cup in South Korea and at the Olympics in Rio, added: “I finally get to play for the United States in the United States and I cannot wait to see how the fans are, and just have the whole crowd on our side this time.”

USA Ryder Cup Team Roster:

1. Dustin Johnson

2. Jordan Spieth

3. Phil Mickelson

4. Patrick Reed

5. Jimmy Walker

6. Brooks Koepka

7. Brandt Snedeker

8. Zach Johnson

Love has four wildcard picks and will select three after the BMW Championship on September 11. He will make his final selection two weeks later after the Tour Championship, only five days before the Ryder Cup begins on September 30.

Among those in contention for a spot, along with Fowler, are Bubba Watson, who finished ninth in the standings, and JB Holmes.
