An unnamed Ottawa Senators’ players tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday night. He becomes the first NHL player to contract the disease. According to Fox News, the player is experiencing mild symptoms and is currently being quarantined.
“In collaboration with team doctors and public health officials, the Ottawa Senators have undertaken to notify everyone who has knowingly been in contact with the athlete,” the team’s statement said. “The Ottawa Senators are in the process of notifying anyone who has had known close contact with the athlete and are working with our team doctors and public health officials. As a result of this positive case, all members of the Ottawa Senators are requested to remain isolated, to monitor their health and seek advice from our team medical staff. The health of our players, fans, and community remains our highest priority. We will continue to do everything we can to help ensure our players, staff, fans and the greater community remain safe and healthy during this time of uncertainty due to the spread of the coronavirus.”

On Monday, the league and the NHLPA told players they could return to their homes including locations outside of North America but are required to remain in self-quarantine until at least March 27. Prior to the announcement, players were prohibited from leaving their home-team’s city. The decision followed a recommendation by the CDC that discouraged gatherings of 50 or more people.
