Noah Lyles Equals Usain Bolt’s 200m World Title Record

Noah Lyles continues to make history.

The 28-year-old equaled Usain Bolt‘s record number of 200m world titles on Friday at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Lyles recorded 19.52 seconds in the race, winning the gold medal over Kenny Bednarek and Bryan Levell.

The win means Lyles has won the 200m at four different world championships.

“I could have easily gassed myself out,” Lyles said. “That’s a testament to how much training we were able to get in, even with the injury.”

The injury Lyles referred to was an ankle problem he suffered last spring. The runner took home the bronze medal in the 100m earlier in the week, clocking a 9.89 time.

Lyles is still looking for his first 200m gold medal in the Summer Olympics. He took home the bronze medal in both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, but finished with a gold medal in the 100m final in the French capital.

“I don’t think any amount of World Championship wins in the 200m will ever give me the empty feeling that I have for that 200m Olympic gold right now,” he said.

Lyles’ fellow countrywoman, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, also won gold in the women’s 200m final, clocking a 21.68 time. In addition, she also won the 100m women’s final last Sunday.
