The NHL has signed commissioner Gary Bettman to a brand new contract that will extend his position through the 2021-2022 season.
The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, although it is known that the deal would run through the term of the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NHLPA. Bettman has served as the league’s commissioner since 1993, and reportedly earned around $9.6 million during the 2013-2014 season.
On Saturday, Bettman addressed a number of issues, including the possibility of expanding to Las Vegas and Quebec City after both cities submitted expansion applications. Bettman also added that Seattle is not in the running to land a team.
“The executive committee … is going through the process … over the next few months,” Bettman stated. “That recommendation can be no expansion, one team or two teams. Lots of things have to be evaluated … (including) ownership, market, arena (and probably of most importance) impact on the league. As things stand right now, there’s no prospect of an arena in greater Seattle.”
