Michigan Basketball’s Season Continues, But Scottie Pippen’s Son, Justin Pippin, Is Already Moving On

The Michigan Wolverines punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 round of men’s March Madness on Saturday, beating Texas Tech 91-79. One Wolverine who won’t be advancing with them, though, is Justin Pippen, son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, who entered the transfer portal on Monday, the day it opened.

Pippen, a former four-star recruit from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California, played sparingly in his freshman season with Michigan. He averaged just over six and a half minutes, 1.6 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game before suffering concussion symptoms two weeks ago. Pippen did not play in either of the Wolverines’ March Madness games.

Ranked the No. 13 combo guard in his class, Pippen chose Michigan over Florida, Stanford, Cal and Texas A&M. He’ll likely be looking for a program where he’s further up the depth chart. The mid-tournament decision has sparked some online controversy, particularly concerning team chemistry and commitment in the age of the transfer portal.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines are enjoying their first Sweet 16 berth in three years. They’ll face the top-seed Auburn Tigers on Friday evening to try and pull off the massive upset.
