New York Mets captain David Wright could potentially miss opening day after being diagnosed with an impingement in his right shoulder on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old third baseman has been experiencing soreness in his right shoulder.
“He’s not going to be throwing for a couple of weeks,” general manager Sandy Alderson said. “Probably not throwing with any real zip for a period after that.”
Wright can still play designated hitter in spring training games, although there may not be enough time to get him ready for opening day. The Mets host the Braves on April 3 at Citi Field to kick off the season.

“No structural damage,” Alderson said before the Mets faced the Marlins in a Grapefruit League game Tuesday. “This is not a surgical issue. This is a matter of having to shut him down for a couple of weeks from throwing to make sure that we get that shoulder strengthened and stabilized.”
Back in May 2015, Wright was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, and eventually underwent neck surgery. Since then, the 13-year veteran has played in just 45 of 281 Mets games, a 16 percent participation rate.
“It’s very sad news to be hearing about D. Wright,” said Jose Reyes, Wright’s longtime and reconnected Mets teammate who will reassume the team’s starting third-base role in the wake of this news. “… What he’s been through the last two years, 2 ¹/₂ years, you have to be very strong of mind to continue to go to the ballpark every day with the right attitude, happy and trying to get better.”
