Matthew Stafford Gives Up $20M To Stay With Rams

The Los Angeles Rams and Matthew Stafford have been in negotiations for a while surrounding the quarterback’s contract.

A deal is finally complete, with Stafford set to earn $44 million this season, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. $40 million is fully guaranteed, with $4 million already being paid to Stafford. He will make $84 million over the next two seasons.

Additionally, if Stafford is still on the Rams roster at the start of the 2026 free agency period, he will earn another $40 million.

The Rams allowed Stafford to explore a possible trade, and teams such as the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders did show interest in the Pro Bowl quarterback. Reportedly, both teams were willing to pay Stafford $100 million over two seasons.

Eventually, Stafford decided he wanted to stay in Southern California.

Stafford has been with the Rams since 2021, after being traded by the Detroit Lions. In his time in Los Angeles, he’s made a Pro Bowl and won Super Bowl LVI in 2021.

The Rams are coming off a 10-7 season that ended in an NFC West division title and a playoff win over the Minnesota Vikings.

The Rams are looking to run it back before the 37-year-old’s career comes to a close.

“We have a chance with him every time he’s at the switch, and love working with him,” Rams head coach Sean McVay told Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio. “I’m hoping it’s a couple more years.”
