Leylah Fernandez Upsets Aryna Sabalenka To Advance To U.S. Open Finals

On Thursday night, 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez defeated No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals of the 2021 US Open 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Throughout the match, Fernandez displayed remarkable mental toughness and fantastic shot selection at crucial moments to overcome the Belarusian’s powerful game. The 5’6” Canadian remained poised and consistent, as opposed to Sabalenka’s wild performance, marked by 52 unforced errors.

Fernandez expressed bewilderment in her postgame interview. “I think one word that really stuck to me is ‘magical’ because not only is my run really good but also the way I’m playing right now,” she said. “I’m just having fun, I’m trying to produce something for the crowd to enjoy.
