Jordan Spieth Says Tiger Woods Could Likely Start Winning Tournaments Again Soon

Tiger Woods may have struggled at the Players Championship in Florida on Sunday, having finished tied for 11th after shooting a 69 in the final round, but he still believes he could return to his previous form soon and Jordan Spieth agrees.

Tiger Woods Players Championship 2018 Comments

“He’ll win sometime soon enough,” Spieth told ESPN. The youngster tied for 41st after shooting a last-round 74 that included an 8 on the final hole. “He’s certainly playing well enough to do so. All in all, I think he played like a 5- or 6-under round, almost shot 7 or 8 and ended up with 3.”

“So his game, if I compare it to other guys that are winning golf tournaments that I’m playing with day to day, it’s right up there.”

According to ESPN, Woods will take a two-week break and will likely return for The Memorial Tournament, which will take place from May 31 to June 3. Woods, 42, has won that event five times but has not participated in it in three years. He is ranked 80th in the world.

“There’s no way I would have predicted I would be at this point at the beginning of the year,” the four-time PGA Championship winner said, according to CNN. “But now I feel like I’ve got my playing feels back and I’m playing tournament golf. I’m not that far off from winning golf tournaments.”
Woods — who has also won four Masters Tournaments and three U.S. Opens — had spinal fusion surgery last year and underwent a rehabilitation program after a headline-grabbing DUI arrest near his home in Jupiter Florida in May 2017. Woods was found passed out in the front seat of his car, and was discovered to have been taking several different types of drugs, including sleep medication and pain medicine to treat his back and other issues. Woods also entered a DUI Diversion program as part of his plea deal.
Earlier in this weekend’s Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Woods was tied for second place with eventual winner Webb Simpson.
Woods finished with a score of 277, 11 under par and seven shots behind 32-year-old Simpson.
