The New York Jets released four-time All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis on Tuesday night.
The 31-year-old will now become an NFL free agent when the new league year begins on March 9. The Jets’ move comes just nine days after Revis was arrested in Pittsburgh for an alleged altercation that landed him four charges: two counts of aggravated assault, one count of conspiracy, and one count of robbery.
“Darrelle Revis is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Jets uniform,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said in the team’s announcement of the move. “His combination of talent, preparation and instincts is rare and helped him become one of the most dominant players of his generation. I appreciate Darrelle’s contributions to this organization and, wherever his career takes him, his home will always be here with the Jets.”
That being said, Revis’ weak performance in coverage last fall, along wit his off-the-field issues, could leave the veteran defensive back without a team for quite some time this offseason.

Revis was drafted by the Jets as the 14th overall pick out of the University of Pittsburgh. In his first six years in New York, he was named to four Pro Bowls, earning three first-team All-Pro nods, and winning the AFC Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2009.
Revis then played one year each with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, before finally returning with the Jets in free agency in 2015. (He signed a six-year, $96 million contract with the Buccaneers in 2013). The cornerback helped lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl victory in the 2014-15 season.
Soon after his release, Revis thanked the Jets on Twitter with the following message:
Revis will still count $6 million against the Jets salary cap this season.
