The Yankees had kept their Wednesday starter under wraps until Sunday, listing it as “TBA.” Manager Aaron Boone indicated the team was considering Cole and Cody Poteet, with Cole always being the likely choice to face the second-place Orioles, who trail the Yankees by just 1½ games in the AL East.
Cole’s return comes at a crucial time for the Yankees, who have thrived in his absence. Despite concerns over their starting pitching, the Yankees’ rotation has performed exceptionally well, boasting the lowest ERA in the majors entering Monday.
Luis Gil, Cole’s temporary replacement and an early favorite for the American League Rookie of the Year, has spearheaded this success. Gil, a 26-year-old right-hander, has been stellar with a 9-1 record and an AL-best 2.03 ERA in 14 starts, despite leading the majors in walks.
Cole’s comeback will see him replace Poteet in the rotation. Poteet has been a stand-in, making three starts for the Yankees and allowing five runs (four earned) over 15 innings while filling in for Clarke Schmidt, who is currently on the injured list with a lat strain.
