George Washington University has made a name for itself lately by storming back from major deficits at their own Smith Center in Washington, D.C. However, after another comeback on Thursday forced overtime against the Richmond Spiders, the Colonials fell 98-90 in the second period of overtime.
The game marked GW’s first defeat at home after 11 victories, and it has now dropped the Colonials (15-5, 4-3) into a four-way tie for fourth place in the Atlantic 10.
GW made a 13-point comeback in the second half against Richmond and forced overtime after Paul Jorgensen scored a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left. Jorgensen also missed an off-balanced jumpshot just before the buzzer at the end of the first extra period, during which Richmond’s ShawnDre Jones’ three-point play tied the game with 20 seconds left.
Jones finished the game with 29 points for the Spiders, including 13 in the overtimes. Virginia Tech transfer Marshall Wood made 7 of 8 three-pointers and scored 22 points. Khwan Fore had 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

“Our defense has just been bad,” Colonials Coach Mike Lonergan said. “We’re a bad defensive team right now.”
GW’s leading scorer, Tyler Cavanaugh, had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Kevin Larsen and Patricio Garino each had 17 points for GW.
Richmond led throughout the second overtime. However, the momentum shifted with roughly eight minutes left when, immediately after a timeout, Cavanaugh scored a three-pointer. Cavanaugh went on to score the next six points to cut the deficit to 63-61. Yuta Watanabe’s baseline drive tied it with 3:25 to go.
The game was tied three more times before the gripping final minute. Richmond’s perfect free throw shooting seemed to be enough, but Jorgensen raced up court and threw the game-tying three-pointer.
The Spiders are now 11-8, 3-4. The Colonials will visit the George Mason Patriots in Virginia on Sunday.
