Deontay Wilder’s Right Hook KO’s Luis Ortiz In Seventh Round

MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas was wild for Wilder on Saturday with a huge comeback win. In a gripping and well fought battle on Saturday night, Deontay Wilder walked away with a big victory over Luis Ortiz with a KO in the seventh round. Nicknamed “The Bronze Bomber,” Wilder landed a solid right hook sending Ortiz down and eventually counted out. This win gives Wilder a 41-0 record, 40 of which come by knockout, and makes him 2-0 against Ortiz. He holds the best knockout rate in heavyweight boxing at 95%.

Round 1 started slow, with Ortiz taking a slight upper hand towards the end. Round 2 saw more of the same with Ortiz forcing Wilder to the ropes, giving Ortiz the opportunity to land some big jabs and keep a marginal lead of Wilder. Rounds 3-5 seemed to heat up with Wilder adding more to his attack, however Ortiz still the clear aggressor. Wilder still felt himself tied to the ropes, but landed some solid return jabs to keep the score within striking distance. Enter round 6 with Ortiz hot with both hands, landing a mean left followed by a right, putting the overall score at a close 59-55 in favor of Ortiz. What would turn out to be the final round of the match, round 7, started with Ortiz on the attack landing an impressive right-left hook combo. However, Wilder’s will took over and a quick left jab followed by a thunderous right sent Ortiz down and out.

Despite a valiant effort by Ortiz, Wilder had enough traps that he could end the bout with yet another KO. The 34 year old has repeatedly said, “my opponent has to be perfect for 12 rounds, and I only have to be perfect for one second,” and he certainly proved that on Saturday night.

It looks like Tyson Fury is next up for Wilder, as he seeks to be the undisputed champion. With a potential victory over Fury, Wilder’s next opponent could be the winner of Andy Ruiz Jr. or Anthony Joshua, as these two will rematch on December 7 for the unified world heavyweight crown.
