The U.S. Open handed Daniil Medvedev a $42,500 fine following his outrage at chair umpire Greg Allensworth in the first round.
The tournament fined the 29-year-old Russian $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse.
The argument caused the match against Benjamin Bonzi to be halted for several minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. During the third set of the match, Bonzi had the match point but missed his first serve. However, the umpire gave the Frenchman another chance after a photographer stepped onto the court.
Medvedev did not like the decision and began protesting with Allensworth.

“Are you a man? Are you a man?” Medvedev said to the umpire. “Why are you shaking?”
The 2021 U.S. Open champion continued to rally up the crowd as he argued with Allensworth.
“He wants to go home, guys, he doesn’t like it here,” he said. “He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.”
After the chaotic episode, Medvedev rallied to force a fourth and fifth set. Bonzi ultimately won the match and advanced to the next round. After the loss, Medvedev smashed his racket in frustration.
U.S. Open security escorted the photographer and revoked his credentials, the United States Tennis Association said.
Sunday’s first-round exit adds to Medvedev’s struggles in 2025. The Russian collected just one win in four Grand Slams this year, progressing to the second round just once. Bonzi got the better of Medvedev in the first round of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon. Medvedev got eliminated once again in the first round, this time to Cameron Norrie at Wimbledon.
Bonzi advanced and beat Marcos Giron in the following round.
