Conor McGregor To Fight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone In UFC 246 In 2020

The UFC announced Thursday that Conor McGregor will make his return to fight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on January 18 in Las Vegas for the UFC 246 welterweight title. UFC president Dana White told ESPN that, “Conor has signed and ‘Cowboy’ is ready to go.” McGregor has not won a UFC fight since 2016, where he took down Eddie Alvarez. Cerrone holds the UFC record for most wins and finishes in history.

This will be McGregor’s first fight since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov on October 6, 2018. McGregor holds a 21-4-0 record in UFC with 18 wins by knockout. He sits at number three in the lightweight division. Cerrone’s record is 36-12-0 with ten knockout wins and sits at number five in the lightweight division. Listed at 5-foot-9, the 31-year-old McGregor weighs in at 155 pounds, the same as 36-year-old Cerrone, measuring out at 6-foot-1. The matchup is set to be at 170 pounds.

McGregor, who is no stranger to controversy, has faced a few recent run-ins with the law. He received a six-month suspension and announced retirement following the loss to Nurmagomedov after the incident that followed that fight. He pleaded guilty to an assault charge in October coming out of Dublin after a video surfaced of him punching a man at a bar. In March, he was arrested in Miami for a cellphone smashing incident, however, the charges were dropped. And in October of this year, he was placed under investigation for two sexual assault allegations. His publicist and manager have said that he vehemently denies such allegations and he has not been charged with anything.

With reputations and a title on the line, this fight will prove to be a great return for McGregor. In response to a question about the potential opponent at an October news conference, he said, “Ask the UFC who the opponent is because I do not give a [expletive] who the opponent is. I am going to go through the entire [UFC roster] like a chainsaw through butter.” Based off that, “The Notorious” seems to be ready to come out of retirement and back into the Octagon.
