For San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, it has been a dismal year for the four-year veteran, a quarterback who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl three years ago, their first since 1994. But yesterday showed that the quarterback is not what he used to be and that he is not only losing faith from 49ers fans, but also his own teammates.
In an away game against the St. Louis Rams during the first quarter, Kaepernick was deep in the 49ers’ end zone trying to get out of a safety situation. When calling for the snap of the ball, a run play was done with little yardage coming out of it. On one side of the field, wide receiver Torrey Smith is seen completely open with no coverage which could have led to yards being made up and the 49ers out of their own red zone.
Kaepernick finished the game completing 20 of his 41 passes for 162 yards but having no touchdowns or interceptions. This type of stat line says of his ineffectiveness as a playmaker in recent weeks and several anonymous 49er players have called for him to be benched so his head can be cleared and his role in the offense can be observed.
The 49ers lost to the Rams in a disappointing 27-6 loss, bringing their record to 2-5.
