Drew Brees #9 of the New Orleans Saints
When you put two decorated veteran quarterbacks who are known to rack up hundreds of passing yards and numerous touchdowns per game in the past to face each other, you can bet that the game will indeed become a pass-infused shootout. This was the case for the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants yesterday when they faced off at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
With both teams having very low-rated defenses coming into the game, the score fluctuated throughout the game with the biggest margin happening with the Saints up two touchdowns on the Giants. The Saints would eventually overcome the Giants with a 50-yard field goal by kicker Kai Forbath to bring the Saints a 52-49 win and a .500 record after a 0-3 start to the season. Saints quarterback Drew Brees finished the game with 511 passing yards and seven touchdowns, becoming only the eighth quarterback in NFL history to reach that milestone.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning would not go quiet in this bout either, throwing 360 passing yards and six touchdowns in which three of them were to star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. who would have 130 receiving yards of his own. With these touchdowns, Manning is now tenth on the all time list with 276 career touchdowns, passing Joe Montana and Vinny Testaverde yesterday with his performance. The combined total touchdowns of Brees and Manning at 13 set a new record for combined touchdowns thrown, which was last done in 1969 with the Saints and the old St. Louis Cardinals.
The Giants, who are still in first place in the NFC East with a 4-4 record, will travel to Tampa Bay next week to face the Buccaneers. The Saints will play host to the Tennessee Titans for Week 9.
