Coaching Legend Pete Carroll Given Boot By Raiders After Old-School Style Failed To Achieve Results

After a disastrous 3-14 season, the Las Vegas Raiders will be looking in a new direction for coaching.

Future football hall of famer Pete Carroll was signed by the Raiders last offseason to give them some veteran leadership. His most notable stint was with the Seahawks from 2010 to 2023. He made the playoffs in 10 of his 14 seasons, including a Super Bowl XLVIII title. After missing the playoffs in 2023, the Seahawks and Carroll mutually agreed to part ways.

After a season off in 2024, Carroll returned to the NFL with the Raiders in 2025. Carroll was the oldest coach in NFL history, turning 74 during the Raiders’ week 2 game.

The Raiders’ poor record is a product of poor roster building and outdated coaching.

The Raiders let several defensive veterans like Tre’von Moehrig, Robert Spillane and Nate Hobbs walk. Instead, they focused on offensive improvements, trading for Geno Smith and drafting Ashton Jeanty. Smith, in particular, didn’t work out, as he threw 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Carroll has generally relied on veterans to lead the rosters. He likes to let the players build the team culture.

However, since the Raiders lost several veterans in the offseason, they needed to rely on Carroll.

Although Carroll prevented a complete collapse of the locker room, it was pretty clear he couldn’t create a culture either. His game management was very old-school, with conservative fourth-down decisions, playing for field position, and trusting the defense to hold the line.

Overall, Carroll was hired to build the roster from scratch. In reality, he’s best suited to join a roster that’s already got its core, but needs a coach who allows them to be the best version of themselves.

As of now, it’s unclear if Carroll will get another job in the NFL, but if a playoff team loses earlier than expected, they might give the coaching legend a call.
