After finishing with the worst record in the NFL in 2019 with a record of 2-14, the Bengals were awarded with the number one overall pick in this year’s draft and took Joe Burrow to be the quarterback of the future. On offense, the Bengals have the foundation in place to have success in the future with Burrow, AJ Green, Tyler Boyd, Joe Mixon, Tee Higgins and John Ross among other guys. The defense is what is concerning for me. Not so much of the talent, but because it is simply not good enough to compete with the high caliber offenses of the AFC North, which is why the Bengals are going to struggle once again in 2020 in my opinion, but was expected of this team. The Bengals are building for success in the decade of the 2020s not in just the year 2020.

The Bengals are not going to win a lot of games in 2020. Do they win more than two, their win total from 2019? Possibly, but it will be tough. Looking at the games prior to their bye, barring injuries to their opponents, I can only see them winning one game, maybe a second. I think the Bengals have a really good chance of winning against Jacksonville in Week 4 at home, but that is partially because the Jaguars are in such disarray that it is something the Bengals should be able to take advantage of. The other game I can see the Bengals having a chance in is against the Colts in Week 6 in Indianapolis. Phillip Rivers is getting up there in age and as he showed last season, he is not the same quarterback that he once was and that is something that the Bengals can take advantage of. Otherwise for the games prior to their bye, I don’t see any other games that the Bengals can win, once again, baring an injury to their opponent. Looking at the games following their Week 9 bye, there are two games that jump off the page. The first being Week 11 against Washington. That game should see Burrow go up against the number two overall pick in the draft from this year Chase Young, two guys who will be tied at the hip for their entire careers being that they were the first and second overall picks in the 2020 draft. The second game that catches my attention does so for similar reasons to that of Week 11 and that is Week 13 against the Dolphins. I am excited for this game solely if Tua Tagovailoa is the starting quarterback for the Dolphins. If he isn’t this game doesn’t mean much but if Tagovailoa is playing, this will be the first game in hopefully many between him and Burrow and since Burrow and Tagovailoa were the first two quarterbacks taken in the 2020 draft, similarly to Burrow and Young, their careers will be forever linked.

The Bengals are one of those teams like I mentioned are not building to win in 2020, but are building to win in the decade of the 2020s, so to say that I would want to go see the Bengals because I think they can win would be a bit of an overstatement, simply because there is still a lot left for them to do. But, I am intrigued with what they have, so the five games that I think you should attend which will all be great litmus tests for the Bengals roster right now and allow us to see what are still some of the issues on their team:

  • Week 5: Bengals at Ravens
  • Week 8: Titans at Bengals
  • Week 11: Bengals at Redskins
  • Week 13: Bengals at Dolphins
  • Week 14: Cowboys at Bengals

I have already talked about Weeks 11 and 13, so I won’t talk any more into those games. In terms of the other three games. I think Week 5 will be a great test against the best team in their division against Baltimore, in Baltimore. The odds of the Bengals winning that game are slim, but that will be a great test, especially for Burrow as to whether or not he is built for the moment. Week 8 against the Titans, they have a prolific running game, so that will test the Bengals defense as a whole. In Week 14, Dallas has a very balanced offense, but is also strong on defense, I think the Bengals defense will once again be tested but also this will be an opportunity to see what Burrow is truly made of because let’s be real, by this point in the season, he won’t have all of his weapons because injuries happen, so we will get to see how he performs against a top team, most likely without his best options around him.
