2021 World Series MVP Jorge Soler and righty reliever Luke Jackson were shipped to the Atlanta Braves late Monday night in exchange for Tyler Matzek and prospect Sabin Ceballos. The Giants sent these two away to shed salary, as they are playing their best ball all season to get them within four games of the NL Wild Card. Soler and Jackson were members of the 2021 squad, who bested the Astros in six games to win the team’s fourth World Series title.
Despite owning a 56-49 record and sitting up top of the NL Wild Card, the Braves are struggling due to injuries to Ronald Acuna, Michael Harris and Spencer Strider. Soler provides quality insurance since the ex-Giant hit 12 home runs, 40 RBI and batting .240 in 93 games this season. During the 2021 World Series, Soler hit .300 with three home runs and six RBI – his 446-foot moonshot in the series-clinching game six became an iconic moment in the franchise’s recent memory as the former Royal won World Series MVP as a result. Soler will play in the outfield since Marcell Ozuna is the designated hitter.
The 32-year-old Jackson had a good July as he struck out 13 in nine innings while walking one batter. The righty hurler possesses a 5.40 ERA and fanned 33 batters in 35 innings pitched on the season. Jackson joins an Atlanta bullpen that has the NL’s lowest ERA at 2.90. In 2021, the Fort Lauderdale native had an ERA of 1.98, surrendering 15 runs and striking out 70 batters in 63.2 innings pitched.
Atlanta wasn’t expected to have a busy trade deadline but reuniting two pieces to the 2021 team was too good to pass up on. However, the Giants are involved in trade rumors for left-handed pitcher Blake Snell, who has gathered interest from teams such as the Yankees and Padres – the trade isn’t likely to occur as Snell has a $30 million cap hit and the Giants want a huge prospect haul in return.
