Bobby Bowden Calls Jameis Winston An ‘Embarassment’

Longtime Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden has never remained quiet about his feelings about Jameis Winston.

“I think it’s a consensus among Florida State fans and boosters that he was an embarrassment, in a lot of ways, to the university,” Bowden stated on The Paul Finebaum Show. “He won a lot of ball games and was probably one of the best football players that ever attended Florida State, but he hurt himself off the field. The good news is he’s young enough to get over that.”

Again, this was not the first time Bowden has criticized the famous athlete; he has previously called him childish for his distracting off-the-field antics. “Jameis has got to grow up,” the former coach told ESPN during the 2014 season. “He does things that kids in grammar school would do, or kids in junior high would do, you know it?”

Now, he is referring to various incidents that have kept the young QB in hot water, including a sexual assault allegation, stealing crab legs and also an obscene outburst in the school’s dining hall.

Still, Lovie Smith’s Buccaneers felt highly of Winston to select the athlete as the first overall pick of the 2015 draft. The Heisman winner vows to grow up, but only time will tell if he can stick to this promise.

As for Bowden, he is probably a bit bias: especially since he was forced out of FSU after six straight seasons without ten wins. However, he does have a fair enough point. Winston for all the good he did — a national championship and only one loss in two seasons — put FSU in the mainstream media for all the wrong reasons.
