Our second team that we will be looking at is the Atlanta Falcons. Last season, the Falcons finished with a record of 7-9, failing to meet rather high expectations. This season, expectations are arguably higher for the Falcons than they were a year ago, given how good their offense looks on paper. Matt Ryan still finds himself under center and has not showed any signs of slowing down, at least as of right now, Julio Jones is arguable the second best wide receiver in football, Calvin Ridley is emerging into a really good number two option opposite of Jones, the Falcons signed running back Toddy Gurley after he was released by the Los Angeles Rams, who probably has something to prove given how his time in L.A. ended. They also have an offensive line which is made up with guys who were all former first round picks. The defense also has some question marks, but there are some nice players there with guys like Grady Jerrett, Deion Jones, Dante Fowler Jr. and Keanu Neal

Looking at the Falcons’ schedule, it is very interesting to say the least. The first nine weeks of the season will see the Falcons alternate between playing at home and playing on the road, until they have their bye week in Week 10. It will be crucial for the Falcons to get off to a strong start prior to their bye week, as following their bye week, they have a gauntlet of a finish. The Falcons play three of their first four games against teams that are projected to be playoff teams, playing the Seahawks, Cowboys and Packers. I would not be surprised with the Falcons entering Week 5 against Carolina either 1-3 or 2-2 just given their opponents, especially since they play both the Cowboys and Packers on the road. Fortunately for them, from Week 5 until their bye, things get a little easier as they play just one playoff team from a year ago in Minnesota. They will also play the projected last place finisher in the NFC South Carolina twice. If Atlanta can enter their bye week 5-4 or 6-3, I think that they will be sitting very well entering the second half of the season. Following their bye week, the Falcons will have to go to New Orleans and take on the Saints, and regardless of whether or not there are fans in the building, this should be a good matchup. I don’t see the Falcons winning more than three of their final seven games, given how tough it is. They play New Orleans twice, Tampa Bay and Tom Brady twice, the defending champion Chiefs on the road, and a Chargers team that looks to be really improved.

If I were planning on going to a Falcons game, assuming that fans are present, these are the five games I would circle on my calendar to go to:

  • Week 1: Seahawks at Falcons
  • Week 4: Falcons at Packers
  • Week 13: Saints at Falcons
  • Week 15: Buccaneers at Falcons
  • Week 16: Falcons at Chiefs

Similar to the Cardinals from yesterday, all five of these opponents for the Falcons have play aspirations and after missing the playoffs last season, the Falcons have the firepower to get back there. I mentioned that the Falcons need to get off to a strong start, and if they can win one or both of the Seahawks and Packers games, games they are probably viewed as the underdogs, that can be huge momentum boosters. Once Week 13 rolls around against the Saints, every win from then on will be crucial as they will most likely be fighting for a wild card spot. At least for me, I would want to attend some of those games toward the end of the year, not just for the talent on the field but also because of what those games could possibly have at stake.
