Angels GM Jerry Dipoto Resigns After Feud With Mike Scioscia

Amidst constant rumors about the hectic state of the Angels clubhouse, it appears that GM Jerry Dipoto has resigned, according to LA Times.

Jerry Dipoto Resigns

Jerry Dipoto has had a long history of fighting with manager Mike Scioscia, which started when Dipoto was first hired by the team. In 2012, the manager was furious after the GM fired hitting coach Mickey Hatcher. However, with the intervention of owner Arte Moreno, the two sides were able to temporarily put away their differences, winning 98 games and the AL West last season.

However, numerous reports suggested that with the recent poor play of the Angels — they are currently 41-37 — the two sides reignited the feud. Apparently, a meeting with the coaching staff went horrible, as the GM discussed the staff’s unwillingness to share the front office’s scouting reports with the players, according to Fox Sports. It has even been said that Dipoto went over Scioscia’s head and supposedly gave these reports directly to the athletes.

Now, the LA Times confirmed that Dipoto resigned. Allegedly the GM gave owner Arte Moreno an ultimatum, which ended with Dipoto packing up his office and leaving, according to Fox Sports. However, there is no timetable on when to expect a new hire, but some people claim that Matt Klentak could be the next GM.

While most teams have accepted the Moneyball system, it appears the Angels are not willing to part with their manager, who delivered a World Series to the organization in 2002. Still, after winning 98 games last year, it has to be disappointing to be only 41-37 and in second place.

But between the offseason problems with Josh Hamilton and this very public feud, was it ever going to be possible for the Angels to win with so many distractions?
