Former St. Louis Cardinal Lou Brock Has Left Leg Amputated

Lou Brock, former longtime baserunner for the St. Louis Cardinals, has had part of his left leg amputated following a diabetes-related infection. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the story, and stated that Brock was amputated just below his left knee. The Post-Dispatch‘s Rick Hummel wrote:

“An infection relative to a diabetic condition has necessitated the amputation of Brock’s left leg just below the knee. But the Brock family has sent a message that the Base Burglar is recovering well and, according to a source, Brock already is taking steps with a walker and will be fitted for a prosthetic device.”

Brock, 76, was known as the ‘Base Burglar’ by many, and boasts a 19-year MLB career, which included 16 seasons with the Cardinals. The left-fielder was also a six-time All-Star and held the highest record of runs scored twice and stolen bases eight times.
