Packers Part Ways With OC Edgar Bennett, QBs Coach Alex Van Pelt

The Green Bay Packers are instituting coaching changes on both the offensive and defensive fronts now that the regular season is over.

After dismissing offensive coordinator Dom Capers, inside linebackers coach Scott McCurley, and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac, Green Bay has also decided to separate from offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett and quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, per ESPN.

Van Pelt’s contract expired after this season.

The Packers are also seeking a receivers coach after Luke Getsy departed to become offensive coordinator at Mississippi State.

Bennett, a former Packers running back, has been on the team’s coaching staff since 2005. He coached running backs until 2010 and receivers from 2010-2014, when he became offensive coordinator after Joe Philbin left to coach the Miami Dolphins.

Bennett, however, did not call plays. Coach Mike McCarthy has handled the offensive playcalling duties since he was hired in 2006, save for a stretch during the 2015 season, when he handed the reigns over to then-associate head coach Tom Clements, who is no longer with the team.

Van Pelt, a former NFL quarterback for the Bills, has been on McCarthy’s staff since 2012.

Offensive line coach James Campen, the longest-serving Packers assistant coach, could also be in the running for the offensive coordinator role. Campen, a former Packers player who is well respected in the NFL, has been on the staff since 2004.

McCarthy is expected to discuss the changes at his season wrap-up press conference on Thursday.

The Packers failed to reach the playoffs this year after finishing the season 7-9 and third in the NFC North. The team is also searching for a new manager, as Ted Thompson is transitioning to senior advisor to football operations.
