Patrick Maroon scored a game-tying goal for the Edmonton Oilers in his return home to St. Louis on Monday night, and it was clearly an emotional night for the left winger.

After Maroon’s big goal, the camera captured his son, Anthony, celebrating in the stands. The Oilers eventually defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime.

Maroon, 28, then saw the reaction, and was asked about it during a post-game interview on Sportsnet. He began choking up in an authentic moment where he said things much different than the cliches many other athletes spout after a victory, likely because his son was in attendance.

“It’s pretty cool, pretty emotional,” Maroon said while holding back tears. “I don’t get to see him as much. It’s pretty special.”

Maroon had previously told the NHLPA website following the game and discussed how hard it could be to constantly be away from his son. He said he always looks forward to talking to Anthony on FaceTime.

“It doesn’t really matter what we talk about it. It’s just that we do get the chance to connect and talk about what’s going on in both our lives,” Maroon said.
