Phillies Land Three-Time Batting Champ Luis Arraez In Trade With Giants

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants on Monday ahead of MLB’s trade deadline, sending the veteran second baseman to his fifth team in five seasons.

Philadelphia also received right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian in the deal, while San Francisco’s return centered on two minor leaguers: 20-year-old right-hander Ramon Marquez, considered a top pitching prospect in the system, and reliever Marty Gair. Kilian, 29, has posted a 4.26 ERA and 3.59 FIP with 53 strikeouts over 44⅓ innings this season and remains under club control for several years, giving the Giants a controllable big-league arm as part of the return. Marquez, still young for his level, has a 3.00 ERA across two minor league seasons and has already reached High-A ball.

Arraez, who is set to become a free agent after this season, arrives in Philadelphia in the midst of his best offensive stretch since 2023. He entered the trade hitting .324, tops in the National League and second in all of baseball behind Houston’s Yordan Alvarez, to go with four home runs and 43 RBIs. A four-time All-Star, he remains one of the sport’s most difficult hitters to strike out and is on pace to lead MLB in strikeout rate for a fifth consecutive season, even though he offers relatively little power or plate discipline in the traditional sense.

The trade sets off a chain reaction across Philadelphia’s infield. Arraez has made it clear in the past that he wants to stay at second base rather than shift elsewhere, saying the position is the only one his body and mind are prepared to play.

To accommodate him, the Phillies plan to move Bryce Harper back to a corner outfield spot, push current second baseman Bryson Stott to third base, and shift Alec Bohm over to first. It’s a defensive shuffle that creates some awkward fits elsewhere on the roster, but one the Phillies deemed worth making to upgrade a lineup that had been getting inconsistent production from its infield, aside from first base.

Philadelphia wasn’t finished dealing Monday, separately acquiring left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the New York Mets in a second trade to bolster its bullpen.

For San Francisco, the move confirms a step back from contention. The Giants entered Monday at 47-65 and 22.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, making the sale of a beloved veteran like Arraez a difficult but necessary step as the organization looks to reload for the future.
