Marina Mabrey begins a new chapter as a cornerstone for the Toronto Tempo and has become one of the biggest winners in the WNBA’s new era, seizing a historic opportunity with the league’s newest franchise.

Mabrey officially joined the expansion team after being selected in the 2026 WNBA expansion draft. Days later, she agreed to a two-year maximum contract reportedly worth approximately $1.2 million per season, making her part of the WNBA’s first known $1 million backcourt alongside Brittney Sykes.

Originally selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft, Mabrey has played for several franchises, including the Dallas Wings, Chicago Sky and Connecticut Sun. Along the way, she built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest competitors, known for her confidence, outside shooting and fearless style of play.

Her time in Connecticut was particularly eventful. In 2024, she averaged 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in 2025, frequently carrying the team with her scoring.

However, Connecticut underwent major changes in the offseason after missing the playoffs. Toronto selected Mabrey in the expansion draft, making her one of the franchise’s foundational players. The Tempo gained an experienced leader who could guide a brand-new organization.

Rather than joining an established contender, Mabrey is one of the faces of the expansion team and is expected to make an immediate impact alongside veteran point guard Julie Allemand. She’s expected to lead Toronto’s offense while mentoring the franchise’s young players.

For Mabrey, the move is about more than a new contract. It represents recognition of years of hard work and the chance to help build a franchise from the ground up. As the Tempo prepares for the season, she enters one of the most important chapters of her career in Toronto.
