The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday morning after a disappointing first half of the season.

The Mets announced Mendoza had been relieved of his duties after the club stumbled to a 34-47 record, leaving the team in last place in the National League East. Former San Diego Padres manager Andy Green, who had been serving as the organization’s vice president of player development, was named interim manager for the remainder of the year.

The move came after a six-game losing streak, including a four-game home sweep by the Chicago Cubs. The Mets have struggled for months, opening the year with promise before enduring a 12-game losing streak in April and failing to recover. Despite carrying a payroll exceeding $330 million, New York has fallen well out of playoff position.

President of baseball operations David Stearns thanked Mendoza for his hard work and dedication to the organization. Owner Steve Cohen acknowledged the move was a difficult decision and said fans deserve better.​

Mendoza was hired before the 2024 season after spending several years as a bench coach for the New York Yankees. He found immediate success, leading the Mets to the National League Championship Series in his first season and finishing as a finalist for National League Manager of the Year. However, the club collapsed in late 2025 and struggled throughout 2026.

Green faces a difficult situation as he returns to the dugout after spending several years in the Mets’ front office overseeing player development. With a season and a half remaining, the Mets face an uphill battle to climb back into the playoff race. Green’s first task will be restoring confidence to a team that entered the season with World Series aspirations.
