Authorities say Poirier was booked into Clayton County Jail at approximately 6:38 p.m. before being released around 10:15 p.m. The exact circumstances leading to the arrest were initially unclear, but reports indicated it happened outside Atlanta’s airport.
Body cam footage obtained by media outlets allegedly shows Poirier appearing intoxicated after being removed from a fight. Reports claim he was involved in a confrontation with airport personnel and police officers, using profanity and challenging an officer during the encounter. The situation escalated before officers were able to de-escalate and take Poirier into custody without injuries.
It’s not a good look for the UFC, and the incident has become one of the biggest stories in the MMA world because of Poirier’s standing within the sport. He built his reputation as a fan favorite thanks to his exciting fight style, charitable work and professionalism. Poirier retired from mixed martial arts in July 2025 following a loss to Max Holloway.
At this time, Poirier faces a misdemeanor public intoxication charge. No felony allegations have been reported, and the case remains ongoing. Under Georgia law, public intoxication can carry penalties including fines and potential jail time. For now, one of the most notable fighters of his generation is dealing with an off-the-octagon challenge as the legal process continues.
