After losing Juan Soto to the crosstown New York Mets in free agency, New York Yankees fans were concerned about the team’s direction because Soto was the star bat that was needed to complement Aaron Judge. In 2024, Soto hit 41 home runs and 109 RBIs with a .288 batting average; Judge won the MVP, hitting 58 home runs and 144 RBIs with a .322 batting average. Judge beat out Cal Raleigh to win his second consecutive MVP award, hitting 53 home runs and 114 RBIs on a .331 batting average.
2025 was still a successful season as the Yankees finished 94-68 and earned the top Wild Card spot. The Yankees bested the rival Red Sox in three games in the Wild Card Series before losing in four games to the Blue Jays in the ALDS. After besting the Brewers 20-9 on March 29, the Yankees hit nine home runs in that game – they would also hit nine home runs on August 19 against the Rays. These games set the new franchise record for home runs in a game, surpassing the previous record of eight home runs set in 2007 and 1939.

After seeing a seven-game lead fade away after a late June series with the Blue Jays, the Yankees needed a series of moves to solidify their roster. Ryan McMahon was traded from the Rockies to fill the void at third baseman while Amed Rosario and Austin Slater helped solidify depth. The biggest transactions came before the deadline when David Bednar and Camilo Doval were added to bolster the bullpen.

New York’s offense batted .251 in 2025, placing them tenth in the majors in batting average. The offense’s 274 home runs led MLB last year, and its 1,371 hits placed it 13th. The rotation recorded a 3.91 ERA altogether to earn them 14th in the majors based on this category – they also placed fourth in strikeouts with 1,440 and fourth in hits surrendered with 1,239.
Outfielder Cody Bellinger capped off his first season in pinstripes with 29 home runs, 98 RBIs and 160 hits on a .272 batting average. Another newcomer, Paul Goldschmidt, recorded ten home runs and 45 RBIs on a .274 batting average. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit 31 home runs, while Trent Grisham hit 34. Giancarlo Stanton finished 2025 with 24 home runs, 66 RBIs and 68 hits on a .273 batting average. Newly acquired ace Max Fried maintained a 2.86 ERA and struck out 189 in his first stint in the Bronx, while Carlos Rodón struck out 203 batters and surrendered 132 hits on a 3.09 ERA. Rookie Cam Schlittler recorded a sub-three ERA in 73 innings while striking out 84 batters.
This offseason was quiet for the Yankees as the front office wanted to “run it back” in 2026. Bellinger signed a five-year deal worth $162.5 million on January 26, 2026. The team also brought back Chisholm, Bednar and Doval on one-year contracts, and Anthony Volpe and Luis Gil renewed their 2026 contracts. Nearly two weeks before Bellinger’s signing, the Yankees acquired ex-Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers via trade.
With nearly the same team from 2025, the Yankees are looking to compete. FanGraphs predicts that the Yankees will win 87 games and the AL East, and they also give the Yankees a 6.7% chance to win the World Series. Prospects Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr. and Carlos Lagrange could see playing time in the majors in 2026 to help support the roster. Gerrit Cole is set to make his return to the rotation by early June, bringing the staff back to full strength. While the Yankees have the potential to be a top team in the AL, the bullpen remains a glaring hole, and question marks arise with offensive consistency. Things could be rough early on due to a depleted rotation, but the Yankees will prevail towards the end of the season and be a playoff team.
