In 2025, the Athletics called Sacramento, California, home. This was because the A’s are awaiting the construction of their new ballpark in Las Vegas.

Last season, the Athletics’ record improved – the A’s finished 76-86, 7 games better than their 2024 record of 69-93. Rookie sensation Nick Kurtz broke out last season, hitting .290 with 36 home runs and 86 RBIs. This was good enough to earn the AL Rookie of the Year award. Kurtz’s walk-off home run off Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu set a franchise record for the longest recorded walk-off homer in the Statcast era. On July 25, 2025, Kurtz became the first rookie in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game — he also tacked on a single and a double to go six-for-six on the game.

Former Athletics closer Mason Miller and pitcher JP Sears were traded to the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline for a prospect haul.

As a team, the Athletics batted .253 last season, placing 5th in the MLB. They also recorded 1,403 hits and 219 home runs. Pitching wasn’t pretty, as the pitching staff recorded a 4.70 ERA, placing the A’s near the bottom of the league. Kurtz led the team with 36 home runs, while Brent Rooker led the team in hits, recording 164. Pitcher Jeffrey Springs struck out 138 batters and recorded a 4.11 ERA in 171 innings.

This offseason has been quiet for the A’s. However, they acquired infielder Jeff McNeil from the New York Mets and signed Mark Leiter Jr. to help the bullpen. Catcher Shea Langeliers also resigned on a one-year deal.

The young core is looking to build on last season’s momentum, with some believing the Athletics are brewing something up. McNeil is a quality left-handed hitter with a 16.6% whiff rate and a 11.9% strikeout rate. This means that McNeil is almost guaranteed to put a baseball into play. The ex-Met hit .243 with 12 homers and 54 RBIs last year. Langeliers clubbed 31 homers, while Rooker hit 30. Uncertainty still looms around the pitching as Luis Severino struggled to keep his ERA down, and Springs is likely to be a trade candidate.

Fans should keep a close eye on the Athletics in 2026 because their roster puts them in a position to play “spoiler.” However, the Mariners, Astros and Rangers are still in the way and have rosters built for competing. Expect the upward trend to continue as the pieces are there, but everyone needs to put in the work.
