After Za’Darius Smith Announces Retirement From NFL, Eagles Confront Major Holes In Defensive Line

Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Za’Darius Smith officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, stepping away from the game after more than a decade of competition.

Smith broke the news on his Instagram. Reflecting on his unexpected path from a small town in Alabama to an 11-year NFL career, he said, “Who would’ve thought a kid from Greenville would make it this far? This game has meant the world to me.”

The 32-year-old informed the Eagles of his decision early Monday. His exit came as a surprise to many, even those inside the organization, especially considering the team’s already-depleted defensive line. Philadelphia entered the season thin at edge rusher following Brandon Graham’s retirement and Josh Sweat’s free agency move. The depth took more hits when Nolan Smith Jr. and Ogbo Okoronkwo landed on injured reserve with triceps injuries.

Smith joined the Eagles on a one-year deal worth $4.25 million shortly after the team’s week one win against Dallas. He made an immediate difference in his short time there. Recorded 1.5 sacks and multiple quarterback pressures over five games. His contract included several incentive bonuses tied to sack totals, but Smith made clear early on that money wasn’t his main motivation. He said, “I’ve had a great career. At this point, I just want to enjoy the game.”

Across his NFL journey, Smith suited up for six different teams, including the Ravens, Packers, Vikings, Browns, Lions and Eagles. He finished with 69 career sacks and a reputation as one of the league’s most consistent pass rushers.

Philadelphia will now look to players like Joshua Uche and Azeez Ojulari to step up until Nolan Smith Jr. returns after the team’s week 9 bye.
