Egg Thrown At Dodgers Coach Dave Roberts Arriving In South Korea For MLB’s First Regular-Season Game
The 2024 MLB regular season began on Wednesday and Thursday, March 20 and 21 in a two-game series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in Seoul, South Korea. While the team was arriving at the Seoul airport last Friday, an egg was thrown at Dodgers head coach Dave Roberts. Thankfully, it didn’t appear to strike him.
There were witnesses at the airport being questioned by police who were looking for the person who threw the egg.
Roberts and the Dodgers were able to move past the situation in the first game in Seoul with a 5-2 win on Wednesday. The Padres were able to respond on Thursday with a 15-11 win and split the series.
This is the first time the MLB has opened a season internationally since the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners did in Tokyo in 2019. In South Korea, athletes and celebrities are usually interviewed and crowded moments after exiting the plane at the airport, so the large gathering wasn’t out of the ordinary. It was just the flying egg that made the headlines.
Roberts has managed the Dodgers since the start of the 2016 season and amassed a 63% winning percentage, leading them to the playoffs each year he has been in charge. Moreover, he’s led Los Angeles to two NL pennants in 2017 and 2018 and a World Series title in 2020.
The MLB season will continue with spring training this week until opening day on March 28. Fourteen games around the league will be going on that day featuring matchups between the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, the New York Yankees and Houston Astros, the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers and many more.
Until then, the Dodgers and Padres will make their way back to the States and prepare for an exciting 2024-25 MLB season.
