Troubled Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel cleared waivers on Saturday, a person with access to the NFL’s internal transaction wire told USA TODAY Sports. The Browns waived Manziel, 23, Friday.

The QB has been the subject of an ongoing Dallas Police Department investigation following an incident in which he allegedly got into an altercation with his girlfriend in the Cleveland area. The police continue to assess a complaint of domestic violence assault filed against Manziel. The case has been submitted to a grand jury to determine if he will be indicted on a misdemeanor assault charge. The NFL is investigating the case as well.

Manziel released the following statement after he was cut:

“I’d like to thank the Browns for the opportunity they gave me — nearly two years ago, we all hoped that we were building what could be a championship team for Cleveland. I will always remember the support I received from the organization, my teammates and especially the fans.”

The Browns selected Manziel out of Texas A&M with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 draft, ahead of Teddy Bridgewater and Derek Carr. Both have since been named to the Pro Bowl.

Manziel started eight total games, losing six. He completed 57 percent of his passes, threw for seven total touchdowns as well as seven interceptions. He rushed for 259 yards and a touchdown.

The Browns were unable to trade him and the nearly $2.2 million in guarantees remaining on his contract.

Following his release from the Browns, Manziel is now free to sign with any team.
