Philadelphia Flyers Edge Washington Capitals 4-3 In Overtime

Braden Holtby has been the NHL’s best goalie for the first half of the season, but he looked human on Wednesday night. He surrendered four goals as his Capitals fell to the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime.

The Flyers took an early two-goal lead thanks to first period goals by Brayden Schenn and Ryan White, but the Caps scored two of their own barely a minute apart in the second period. Before that frame ended, though, Jakub Voraceck would beat Holtby and restore a Philadelphia lead.

The Capitals forced overtime thanks to a late marker from Andre Burakovsky, but Voraceck would find the back of the net, this time 38 seconds into the extra period, for a Flyers win.

Even though they lost, Capitals head coach was happy with his team’s effort given that they hadn’t played a game in eight days thanks to the blizzard that battered the nation’s capital.

“You have to realize that there was going to be rust on our blades and on our hands and the way we think,” he said. “My glass is half full, rather than half empty after a not-so-great start.”

As for the Flyers, the win snapped a three-game skid and keeps them in the thick of the playoff hunt.

“We know we can play anybody in this league,” said Michal Neuvirth, who was playing against his former team. “Our goal is to make the playoffs, and the Flyers (organization) expects us to be in the playoffs and if we’re going to play the way we played tonight, I’m sure we’re going to do it.”
