Yankees’ Pitcher Domingo German To Serve 81-Game Suspension For Domestic Violence

New York Yankees pitchers Domingo German has been handed an 81-game suspension for violating the MLB policy regarding domestic violence. The decision was announced Thursday by commissioner Rob Manfred.

Having already been placed on administrative leave for the final 18 games of the 2019 season, which included nine postseason games, German will sit out of the first 63 games of the 2020 season.

“My office has completed its investigation into the allegations that Domingo German violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” Manfred said. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. German violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate.”

The Dominican-born pitcher allegedly had an altercation of sorts with his girlfriend Mara Vega, and although no police report was filed, the league chose to investigate the claims of domestic abuse.

“This is a bigger issue, obviously,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “When you hear the words ‘domestic violence,’ it’s one of the things that stops you in your tracks.”

This ban is the longest levied ban by the MLB for a player who was not formally charged. Chicago’s Addison Russell was suspended 40 games in 2018-2019 for allegations by his ex-wife.

Jose Torres, former San Diego pitcher received 100 games in 2018, however after an arrest on domestic violence charges.

Despite this lengthy suspension, the Yankees have prepared to go on without German. Acquiring Gerrit Cole in a huge $324 million, nine-year deal, as well as returning a solid pitching corps with James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino, J.A. Happ and Jordan Montgomery, the Yankees have put themselves in a great position to win from the mound.
