WNBA Team Atlanta Dream, Co-Owned By Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, Close To Being Sold After Player Protests

WNBA franchise the Atlanta Dream is close to being sold. The Dream is co-owned by the controversial former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Georgia).

In a statement released by the WNBA, the league said, “As it relates to the Atlanta Dream, we understand a sale of the franchise is close to being finalized,” the league went on to stay that further information will not be released until the team is sold. “Once the sale negotiation is concluded, additional information will be provided.”

Last summer, Loeffler denounced the Black Lives Matter movement, calling it a “Marxist group.” The former senator claimed that the group was “anti-Semitic and doesn’t support the nuclear family.”

Loeffler’s comments opposed of what many players in both the NBA and WNBA were advocating for in terms of social and racial justice. The players for the Dream protested as a result and called for Loeffler to sell the team.

In response to calls to sell the team, the former senator resisted saying, “They can’t push me out for my views,” and “I intend to own the team. I am not going.”

Later in a December campaign event, Loeffler was photographed with Chester Doles, a white supremacist who is part of the Klu Klux Klan and a Neo-Nazi National Alliance.

Loeffler failed to gain a majority during the November election. This prompted a run-off election to be held on January 5 between Loeffler and her Democratic opponent Raphael Warnock. Warnock won the run-off election helping the Democrats gain control of the Senate.
