Wisconsin High School Students Banned From Chanting At Their Opponents
Fan support is a key part of a sporting event. Apparently the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) focuses on the idea of support, as they have banned high school basketball fans from chanting certain words and phrases at opposing teams.
The ban included crowd staples such as “You can’t do that,” “Fundamentals,” “Air ball,” “There’s a net there,” “Sieve,” “We can’t hear you,” the “scoreboard” cheer and “season’s over” during tournament play, according to an email obtained by the Post-Crescent. The ban came to national attention after a three-sport athlete at Hibbert High School was suspended for a vulgar tweet about the regulations.
ESPN’s Jay Bilas spent much of Tuesday mocking the ban, which he said came from people with “too much time on their hands, and too little common sense,” on Twitter.
Students at Ashwaubenon High School also took matters into their own hands, attending a game dressed in black, with duct tape over their mouths.
