What Does The Future Hold For Aaron Rodgers? It’s A ‘Beautiful Mystery’

A “beautiful mystery” has hung over the Green Bay Packers franchise since Aaron Rodgers used the term to describe his future with the team about a year ago.

In addition to the mystery of losing to Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers at home on Saturday, the team will have to figure out what it will do if this weekend was indeed the last time Rodgers took the field in yellow and green.

A fourth loss in four postseason tries against his childhood favorite team may have turned such a seemingly implausible scenario into reality. Not to mention the fact that the Packers took an early 7-0 lead and even led 10-3 with about five minutes remaining and the ball in Rodgers’ hands.

However, a few minutes later San Fran was kicking a game-winning field goal for a 13-10 road win.

“A little numb, for sure,” Rodgers said after the game. “I didn’t think it was going to end like this.”

What’s the “it” he didn’t think was going to end like this? The season? His career in Green Bay? His career in general?

The 38-year-old did arrive at training camp this past season and admit he mulled retirement. That came during a press conference in which he let loose on the team that drafted him with a list of grievances about front-office decisions.

After, the team restructured his contract with language that allows him to force his way out of town this offseason.

“I don’t think it’s fair to anybody, or myself, to really go down those paths at this point,” Rodgers said before adding that he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuild. “It’s disappointing. So sad and fresh. I’ll have conversations in the next week or so and, you know, start to contemplate after that.”

“Sometimes you think things are going to go a certain way and then you get a big course correction,” Rodgers added. “But you’ve got to keep moving. Keep on moving forward, even when it doesn’t feel like it’s possible because of the sadness, the frustration, the enormity of the expectations, the disappointment of the results.”
