Watch: Canadiens Goalie Carey Price Repeatedly Punches Devils’ Kyle Palmieri After Collision At Net

Montreal Canadiens goalkeeper Carey Price unleashed his fury on a forward during his team’s 5-2 home victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

Towards the end of the first period, Devils forward Kyle Palmieri raced in on a scoring opportunity and ended up sliding into Price, knocking him over.

The Canadiens goalie was unsurprisingly unhappy, and immediately responded by getting up and exacting his revenge. Price began repeatedly punching Palmieri with his blocker while the forward remained on the ice. Eventually, several other players on both teams got involved in the brawl in front of Price’s net. Price said he “got fired up.”

“I just gotta stick up for myself, that’s the way it is,” Price said. “I don’t know, I got run over on the first goal so I figured I wasn’t going to take another one.”

Price got a double minor for the hits on Palmieri with 18 seconds left in the first.

Palmieri was called for goaltender interference on the play, and he wasn’t happy with Price’s response.

“Any time you’re on the ice, defenseless and you’re taking a blocker to the back of the head, it’s not a great situation to be in,” Palmieri told NHL.com.

During the 2013-2014 Eastern Conference finals, Price sustained a lower-body injury after Rangers forward Chris Kreider crashed into him. The goalie was forced to miss the remainder of the postseason.

Price also suffered a season-ending knee injury last year, so he can’t really be blamed for becoming angry when Palmieri crashed into his legs.

Price made 19 saves on Thursday, and Torrey Mitchell scored twice for the Habs. Phillip Danault had a goal and an assist, and Artturi Lehkonen and Max Pacioretty also scored for Montreal (18-6-3), who improved to 13-1-1 at home.

“I thought that was one of our best performances of the year,” Price said. “I thought we used our legs well. We looked like a fast team out there. We were cycling the puck, making it hard to skate with us, and that’s our strength.”

Adam Henrique and Taylor Hall scored for the Devils (12-8-6), which had won consecutive games. Cory Schneider made 44 saves.

The Devils will next host the St. Louis Blues on Friday, while the Canadiens will host the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
