Washington Football Team Sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
The Washington Football Team has agreed to terms with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The contract is a one-year deal worth $10 million but could grow to $12 million with incentives.
The addition of Fitzpatrick is a bit odd for a team that is looking to rebuild. Adding such an aged quarterback is a bit of a head scratcher, however, Fitzpatrick has had plenty of “FitzMagic” moments over his long career in the NFL. Signing the veteran quarterback is a short-term solution, but perhaps Washington believes it could still compete in the weakened NFC East. Despite paying good money for Fitzpatrick’s services, the veteran quarterback will still have to compete with other quarterbacks such as Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen for the starting job.
The 38-year old veteran is known to be a journeyman, having played with eight different teams in the league. Last season, Fitzpatrick played with the Miami Dolphins and was a mentor to rookie Tua Tagovailoa. The 38-year-old played in eight games for Miami and recorded 2,091 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and had a 68.5 percent completion rating in 2020.
Time will tell if Fitzpatrick can beat out Heinicke and Allen for the starting gig. If so, his top targets will be wide receiver Terry McLaurin and tight end Logan Thomas.
